We actually have enough room for them. There are more abandoned houses in the US than there are homeless. According to this article from 2014, there are 6 empty houses for every homeless person: http://themindunleashed.org/.../18600000-vacant-homes..., this one confirms similar data: http://www.truthdig.com/.../more_vacant_homes_than.... Here it is by city: http://www.usatoday.com/.../cities-most.../12536257/.
So far, there are 11 million+/- refugees. We wouldn't be taking all of them, but we could take a lot of them.
So, let’s say we have 4 million of our own homeless. There are 8 million empty houses. Not taking into consideration that this total is counting individuals, not families (my cousin's family of 5 is part of this statistic). Let's say we group them - 2 homeless people per 2 bedroom house who are now roommates - yay, meeting new people. We can also say 4 homeless people (family) per 3 bedroom house. This allows boy/girl children to have separate rooms, and parents to have their own room. Same sex children can share a room.
Anyway, off track here.... Let's say we put 2 homeless people per house - that's only 2 million houses used, which leaves us with 6 million houses left. If we take half of the refugees (6 million to make it an even number), we can put 2 refugees per house like our homeless, and that gives us another 3 million houses filled. We still have 3 million houses left empty.
Sure, most of these abandoned houses need work. They're not great living conditions. Let the homeless occupants work to fix it up and make it livable.
Now jobs - We can't afford to (nor will the US ever) give them free food, clothing, electricity, water, etc. How will they get this stuff? We have roads that need to be fixed, bridges, and tunnels, etc. that need work. Put those able in construction. Putting aside the minimum wage and slave wage argument, big industry can afford to pay these people $8.00/hour to do jobs. There are plenty of jobs out there, even part time.
Seriously, these abandoned houses are sitting there decaying, bringing down property values, and attracting crime. Fill them with those in need. We have the room; we just need the assholes in government to get out of our way.
